When we say that ancient religion is composed of myths, we are not being dismissive of either the cultures themselves or the knowledge possessed by them. On the contrary, myths are full of meaning that has proved itself highly important to human civilization, providing along with colorful and imaginative tales much practical information that would have been difficult to pass along otherwise....
As shown by the esteemed mythologist Joseph Campbell and others over the centuries, myth ranks as a very important facet of human culture that has enriched significantly entire civilizations. In addition to communicating interesting aspects of the human psychological, emotional and spiritual landscape, mythmaking has epitomized much highly germane and useful knowledge, without which mankind could scarcely progress.
